Queen Anne’s County Commissioners announced that May and June have been officially proclaimed as Turtle Awareness Months! Turtles are essential to our ecosystem, acting as vital indicators of environmental health and contributing significantly to biodiversity.
However, these incredible creatures face numerous threats, including habitat loss, pollution, illegal trafficking, and climate change. Many turtle species are now endangered, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them.
The Chesapeake Tidewater Region, including our own Queen Anne’s County, is home to a variety of turtles—11 of Maryland’s 19 species, to be exact! These waters and woodlands provide crucial habitats for their survival and reproduction. Additionally, sea turtles found in Maryland waters are safeguarded by the Endangered Species Act.
Turtle Awareness Month is our chance to educate and inspire our community to take action. Here’s how you can help:
- Assist turtles crossing roads, but only if it is safe for both you and the turtle.
- Avoid disturbing nesting turtles or those laying eggs.
- Protect and promote turtle habitats whenever possible.
- Never remove or transport turtles to different regions.
Join us in our efforts to conserve turtles, preserve their habitats, and ensure their survival for generations to come. Let’s work together to make Queen Anne’s County a sanctuary for these remarkable creatures!
Let’s show our support and respect for turtles this May and June, and beyond!
