Veterans Memorial Inaugural Flag Raising Ceremony at Queen Anne's County's Veterans Point at Wells Cove Park
Veterans, military personnel, community leaders, and government officials gathered at Wells Cove Park on Monday, May 27th, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM for the Inaugural Flag Raising Ceremony at the newly established Veterans Point.
The event, organized in collaboration with key partners including Mike Foster of the Earl and Barbara Griffin Foundation, Walt Petrie, Joe Candella, and Eric Johnson of the Veteran and Military Support Alliance (VAMSA), along with Jim Moran of the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners, Queen Anne’s County Government, Department of Public Works, and Department of Parks and Recreation, marks a significant milestone in honoring the servicemen and women of the United States Armed Forces.
The memorial features capstones, benches, stonework, lighting, and a flagpole, symbolizing the dedication to those who have served. A prominent entrance sign proudly acknowledges the contribution of the Earl and Barbara Griffin Foundation, particularly honoring Earl Griffin, a World War II Veteran and former Maryland State VFW Commander.
The ceremony included the formal unfolding of the flag, with narration explaining the significance of each fold, followed by its first raising at Veterans Point. Attendees were united in singing the National Anthem and heard brief remarks from project donors and leaders.
An Official Dedication Event scheduled for November 11th at 11 AM.
Veterans and currently serving personnel were encouraged to attend, with the invitation to wear their uniforms, in whole or in part, as a mark of respect and solidarity.
This new addition offers an opportunity for the community to come together and pay tribute to those who have sacrificed for their country. While the project approaches completion, a few minor finishing touches remain to be added.
