Queen Anne’s County Backpack Committee is Awarded $20,000

Queen Anne’s County Community Partnerships for Children and Families, aka Local Management Board, and the Queen Anne’s County Chamber of Commerce, recognized the strong need to support the youth of Queen Anne’s County. They applied for funding from the Mid-Shore Community Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund, on behalf of the Queen Anne’s County Backpack Committee. They are pleased to announce they received an award in the amount of $10,000 to assist the county’s youth.

Additionally, the Backpack Committee received $34,250 from the Queen Anne’s County Commissioner’s fiscal year budget in FY 20 for the Backpack Committee. The Commissioner’s realized that this was not enough funding to assist the increased number of students being served. The Committee applauds the Commissioner’s for the gracious $10,000 that was also given to the Backpack Committee.

Queen Anne’s County Backpack Committee is a hunger relief program that serves Queen Anne’s County Public School children who are food insecure. Churches and others provide easy meals for children to prepare for themselves.  Food is packaged by volunteers and placed in children’s backpacks for the weekends. Last year, they served approximately 420 students, and more recently due to COVID-19, they are serving over 850 students each week. This is an essential program during these difficult times, providing the very basic needs to support our children.

If you would like to support this program, The Backpack Committee is accepting food donations such as single-serving pasta, fruit cups, juice boxes, peanut butter, kid-friendly soups, etc. There is a drop-off site at Rita’s Italian Ice located in Stevensville, Maryland. The Backpack Committee is pleased to partner with the Queen Anne’s Advocates for Youth, Inc.  Donations and funds should be sent to Queen Anne’s Advocates, Inc (a 501c3, designated as a tax-exempt corporation that is eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions for this organization/project) 110 Channel Marker Way, Suite 101, Grasonville, MD 21638.  Please note “Backpack Committee” on the memo line of check. For more information on this charitable committee and how you can also be of service, please contact Kathy Sells at kathysells@atlanticbb.net or Lee Franklin, 410-643-2753.
