Queen Anne’s County Commissioners voted Jan 28th to pass Ordinance 19-17 concerning expansion of a use and tenant space in a structure more than 65,000 square feet of gross floor space in the Urban Commercial Zoning District Density and Intensity Requirements.
This ordinance specifically affects only the vacant Kmart building, which closed its doors in December. The goal of the ordinance is to attract new businesses to the vacant site.
Heather Tinelli, Queen Anne’s County Economic and Tourism Development director, said, “This ordinance allows the Cordish Company the ability to market the site to larger retailers whose footprint may exceed the current space vacated by Kmart. This property is a prime location with great visibility and the last thing we want is for it to sit empty for a long period of time and this text amendment gives ownership the leverage needed to market to the kinds of retailers we would like to see enter our market.”
