[ARCHIVED] Snow Transitions to Ice as Road Conditions Remain Hazardous Across QAC

Copy of Copy of What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.

Snow Transitions to Ice as Road Conditions Remain Hazardous Across Queen Anne’s County

Queen Anne’s County is advising residents that snowfall has transitioned to sleet and freezing rain, creating dangerous and slick conditions across the county.

County crews along with State Highway Administration continue snow removal efforts; however, ice remains the biggest challenge, especially as temperatures are expected to remain at or below freezing. Just because snow has stopped falling does not mean roads are safe. Ice may still be present on road surfaces, bridges, and secondary roads.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Those who must travel are urged to use extreme caution and prepare for winter driving conditions.

Winter Driving Safety Reminders

  • Do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is winter ready with adequate tire tread, working lights, full fluids, and sufficient fuel.
  • Pack blankets, water, and food as a precaution.
  • Bring extra windshield washer fluid.
  • Completely clear snow and ice from all surfaces of your vehicle, including the roof and hood.
  • Take it slow on ice and snow. Speed limits are set for dry conditions.
  • Don’t crowd the plow. Stay well back and never attempt to pass a plow.
  • Use lower gears when navigating hills.
  • If your vehicle begins to slide, remain calm. Ease off the accelerator, steer gently in the direction of the slide, and brake carefully.
  • If your vehicle becomes disabled, pull as far off the roadway as possible, activate hazard lights, remain in your vehicle, and dial #77 for assistance.

Queen Anne’s County will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to follow official county communications and local weather forecasts.
