[ARCHIVED] Oct 15 is White Cane Awareness Day in QAC

White Cane Awareness Day

The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners have proclaimed October 15 as White Cane Awareness Day in Queen Anne’s County. The proclamation recognizes the white cane as a symbol of independence and mobility for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

The white cane allows people who are blind to travel safely and freely, empowering them to lead independent, productive lives and to fully participate in the community.

Residents are reminded that Maryland law requires motorists and cyclists to use caution when approaching a person carrying a white cane. Employers are also encouraged to recognize and utilize the valuable skills and talents of blind citizens in the workplace.

The proclamation calls upon schools, colleges, and universities to offer full opportunities for training to blind persons, and upon all citizens to recognize the white cane as a tool of independence.
