Prescribed Fire Planned at Conquest Preserve on March 19 for Habitat Restoration
Queen Anne’s County Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Washington College Natural Land Stewardship Program, will conduct a prescribed fire at Conquest Preserve on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, weather permitting. The burn will take place in a strategically defined section of meadow, approximately 30 acres in size, as part of an ongoing seasonal maintenance program.
Prescribed burns serve several important purposes, but the primary goal at Conquest Preserve is to improve wildlife habitat and control invasive trees, shrubs, and weeds. Invasive species outcompete native, beneficial plants that support local birds and meadow-dwelling wildlife. By using controlled fire, we can reinvigorate the meadow, nourish the soil, and reduce the risk of uncontrolled brush fires by clearing dead plant debris and promoting new plant growth.
Conquest Preserve will remain open to the public during the burn. However, signage will be posted at the entrance and at the burn sites on either side of Conquest Road to inform visitors.
