[ARCHIVED] MD Department of Agriculture Visits Queen Anne’s County

Sec Atticks Visit

Secretary Kevin Atticks of the Maryland Department of Agriculture recently embarked on a tour of Queen Anne’s County, where he visited several farms showcasing excellence in local farming programs. These farms highlighted innovative initiatives supported by both local and state grant funding operations, furthering their commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

The tour began at Kristy’s Backyard Blooms, a family-run business situated outside Centreville. Kristy Dulin, the owner, proudly showcased the farm’s impressive greenhouse, which received funding support through a state grant. In addition to poultry and grain production, Kristy’s Backyard Blooms has successfully integrated a flower business, demonstrating the diversification and sustainability of local agricultural practices.

The tour culminated at Oksana's Produce Farm in Chestertown, Maryland, where Secretary Atticks met with Oksana Bocharova, the farm's owner. Oksana, whose passion for farming was nurtured by her father in Russia, has transformed her dream into reality with the support of programs designed to empower immigrant, women, and beginning farmers. Through sustainable farming methods and a commitment to organic practices, Oksana's Produce Farm serves as a beacon of environmental stewardship and agricultural innovation.

Commissioner Jack Wilson expressed pride in showcasing local farms that exemplify Maryland's agricultural heritage and commitment to sustainability. He lauded the efforts of Secretary Atticks and the Maryland Department of Agriculture in supporting initiatives that promote economic prosperity and environmental conservation.

Secretary Atticks, who assumed office in January 2023, brings a wealth of experience to his role, having served as CEO and founder of Grow & Fortify, a non-profit supporting value-added agricultural organizations and businesses. His visit to Queen Anne’s County underscores the department's commitment to promoting profitable agriculture, environmental protection, and enhancing the quality of life for all Marylanders.
