County Commissioners Support Several Projects Funded by Maryland’s Local Parks and Playground Program

Queen Anne’s County Commissioners support several projects for the Department of Natural Resources-Local Parks and Playground Infrastructure Grant totaling one million dollars in grant funds.

The director of Parks and Recreation, Steve Chandlee outlined the projects that he recommends funding with this grant.

Several basketball courts will receive upgrades. One of the basketball courts at Round Top Park will be renovated into two pickleball courts and the remaining basketball court will be renovated ($177,165.00). The basketball court lights ($137,190.00) at Pinkney Park will be replaced along with color coating ($21,547.00).

Old Love Point, Route 18 and Batts Neck Park athletic fields will receive roof covers to the dug outs ($164,098.00).

$500,000.00 from this grant will be for building a skate park on Kent Island. In addition to the grant funding, Parks and Recreation is requesting $100,000.00 from Impact Fees. The exact location of the park and additional details will be announced at a later date.

At the July 18th Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, Director Steve Chandlee invited parents and students interested in a skate park to come and participate in the meeting. Several teens spoke up at the meeting along with their parents. A petition was also circulated online which has reached over 1,600 signatures.

“This is a great example of how local government works and what happens when residents get involved. If you have ideas, we encourage you to contact us.” said County Commissioner President, Chris Corchiarino

The State of Maryland Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure program provides funding to focus on restoring existing and creating new park and green space systems in Maryland's cities and towns. Flexible grants are available to municipalities to rehabilitate, expand or improve existing parks, create new parks, or purchase and install playground equipment.
