The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners have officially proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month, recognizing the vital role parks and recreation play in strengthening our community.

Parks and recreation services are more than just fun and games — they promote health and wellness, provide educational and development opportunities for youth, support environmental sustainability, and help drive economic development. Queen Anne’s County’s parks, trails, open spaces, and recreational programs serve residents of all ages, offering places to connect with nature, engage in physical activity, and build stronger community ties.

"Parks and recreation are the heart of our community,” said the Commissioners. “They enhance the quality of life for our residents and provide a foundation for a healthier, more vibrant Queen Anne’s County.”

The Commissioners encourage residents to explore the many parks, trails, and programs offered by the Queen Anne’s County Department of Parks and Recreation this July. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, attending a summer camp, or enjoying an outdoor concert, there are endless ways to participate and celebrate Parks and Recreation Month.

County Commissioners Celebrate New Home for Kent Island Community Garden at Open House Event

Queen Anne’s County Commissioners recently joined community members and garden organizers to celebrate the official opening of the newly relocated Kent Island Community Garden. The open house marked a major milestone in the garden’s growth, now flourishing at its new home on county-owned property at 210 White Pine Lane in Stevensville, next to the Queen Anne’s County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Kent Island Community Garden, formerly known as the Galilee Community Garden, had operated for 10 years in another part of Stevensville. When the garden needed a new location, organizers reached out to the County Commissioners, who responded by approving a lease agreement and identifying county land that could support the garden's continued success.

The new site offers expanded space for gardening, access to utilities, and proximity to the Cross Island Trail, Island Dog Park, and other community assets. With support from the Department of General Services and the Fire Marshal’s Office, the property was transformed into a vibrant and welcoming space for residents to grow food, build community, and learn about sustainable gardening practices.

“This garden is a great example of how we can work together to support grassroots community projects,” said County Commissioner Chris Corchiarino. “It not only promotes healthy living and sustainability but also strengthens the ties that make our community so special.”

The garden includes 18 individual raised beds, three specialty gardens—wildflowers, native pollinators, and herbs—and a dedicated garden bed for Haven Ministries, an organization that serves individuals and families in need. The site also features ADA-accessible plots, a picnic area, a shed, deer fencing, and an irrigation system—amounting to over $25,000 in capital investments.

Organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the garden works closely with the University of Maryland Extension, Queen Anne’s County Master Gardeners, Kent Island High School, and the public library system to offer educational programming. Future plans include the addition of a greenhouse for native plant propagation, a native berry patch, expanded pollinator gardens, and hands-on learning opportunities for local schools and community groups.

Emergency Training to Be Held at Centreville Middle School – No Cause for Alarm

The Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services, along with partnering agencies, will conduct a Full-Scale Emergency Sheltering Exercise at Centreville Middle School on Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM each day.

This important preparedness exercise is designed to simulate a real-world emergency response, including the setup and operation of a public shelter. Residents in the area may notice increased activity at the school, including emergency vehicles, uniformed personnel, and volunteers participating in the exercise.

Please be advised this is only a drill and there is no cause for concern.

The goal of the exercise is to evaluate and improve sheltering plans, coordination among agencies, and response capabilities in the event of a major emergency. This type of training is vital to ensuring Queen Anne’s County is ready to respond when needed.

We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to strengthen the safety and preparedness of our community.

For questions about the exercise, contact the Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services at 410-758-4500.

We Need Your Voice: Help Shape a Stronger, More Connected Community

The Queen Anne’s County Local Management Board (QAC LMB) is asking for help from the public, community partners, and local organizations. The QAC LMB is working on a new project to improve how services are delivered in our county. We want to hear your ideas through a short survey.

This effort is part of Maryland’s ENOUGH Act, which encourages communities to work together to fight childhood poverty and improve opportunities for families. The QAC LMB is exploring how to build a Community Collaboration Hub—a team or organization that helps groups across the county work together better.

The survey will help QAC LMB understand its current strengths, what’s missing, and how ready the community is to work together on important issues regarding children and families. It also asks for ideas about local groups, programs, or services that are already helping with poverty-related issues. These suggestions will help build a Community Asset Map, which will be shared with the public and all partners.

Survey responses will be shared in summary form only—your name will not be attached to your answers.

The survey is open until July 18, 2025. Your feedback will help shape how QAC LMB and its partners work to improve life for children, youth, and families in Queen Anne’s County.
