QAC Aging and Transportation

Welcome back to the QAC Aging and Transportation Newsletter for the month of September!

National Senior Center Month

Senior Centers are not just places to gather, they are vibrant hubs in the community that promote socialization and connection, health and wellness, and overall well-being for aging adults.  This September, we proudly celebrate National Senior Center Month, honoring the vibrant communities and powerful transformations happening every day at Senior Centers here in Queen Anne’s County as well as across the state and country.

This year’s theme, “Powering Possibilities:  Flip the Script,” invites us to challenge outdated stereotypes about aging and embrace the energy, creativity, and resilience of today’s older adults.  From wellness classes and personal enrichment programming to socialization and connection our Senior Centers are flipping the script on what it means to age.  We are not slowing down, we are stepping up, leaning in, and rewriting the story of aging with every class, conversation, and connection.

Stop by your local Senior Center today for a tour and a calendar of activities.  Whether you are looking to get active, stay connected, or want to try something new, there is a place here for you.  Join us this September and be a part of the movement that is reframing aging.

Scam Watch

Scroll on down to the blue Scam Watch section to stay safe! Each month we highlight a type of scam and list some steps you can take to keep yourself, and those around you, from becoming a victim.

This month is focused on Mobile Payment Apps.

Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and being prepared in advance makes a world of difference. Start by knowing your evacuation zone, creating a family emergency plan, and assembling an emergency kit with essentials like food, water, medications, and important documents. These are easy and can be fun to involve the whole family in being prepared!

In the event of a hurricane warning, be sure to secure your home by boarding up windows, clearing gutters, and moving loose outdoor items indoors. Ensure your car is fueled and stocked with supplies and be prepared to make arrangements for pets and anyone with special needs. Stay informed through alerts from FEMA, NOAA, and local emergency services.

If a hurricane is approaching, follow evacuation orders and shelter in a small, interior room if staying home. Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters and wait for an official "all clear" sign before returning to / exiting from your home. Use caution during cleanup—wear protective gear, avoid electrical hazards, and document any damage for insurance purposes. Preparedness saves lives and reduces damage, so taking steps early is key to staying safe.

Mobile Payment Apps

Mobile payment apps like Cash App, PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle are convenient—but have been increasingly exploited by scammers since their creation on smartphones. Much like Bitcoin ATMs, the issue isn’t the apps themselves, but their lack of regulation and user awareness.

These apps allow users to send money as easily as swiping a debit or credit card—simply enter a name or ID and transfer funds, often with no fees. Their speed and ease make them especially popular among younger users who rarely carry cash.

However, that same speed is their biggest vulnerability. Once money is sent, it’s nearly impossible to recover. Scammers take advantage of this, combining it with other tactics to steal funds with minimal traceability.

Some ways to combat this type of fraud:

  • Be wary of texts or calls about payment apps. If you use a payment app, all notifications or alerts should be visible within your app after you log in. Any outside communication should be verified by privately logging into your app and checking there.
  • No reputable service or organization will contact you to request an urgent payment using a payment app. If this occurs, make sure to contact the service or organization using a known or publicly available phone number first to verify the original call or message.
  • Avoid using payment apps to purchase anything when other options are available. While many small businesses have begun using these services, they should still accept cash, checks, or cards as payment methods. The safest way to use these apps is to send and receive money to/from friends and family.
  • What to do if you get scammed:
    • Notify the payment app platform and ask them to reverse the charge.
    • If your credit/debit card or bank account are linked to your app account, contact your credit card company or bank and ask them to reverse the charge.
    • File a police report.
    • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).
  • If you believe you are the victim of an Internet crime, or if you are aware of an Internet crime, you can file a complaint with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
