QAC Aging and Transportation
Welcome back to the QAC Aging and Transportation Newsletter for the month of July! High temperatures bring summer fun, but it's important to stay safe. The Centreville and Kent Island branches of the Queen Anne’s County Library will also be available as Cooling Centers for anyone who needs to take a break. Also, be sure to watch for signs of heat illness in yourself and others and take advice to rest in the shade or hydrate. For more information, see the "Stay Safe & Cool This Summer: Cooling Centers Open During Extreme Heat" later in the article. For more Heat Related Preparedness Information, please read the following announcement from Governor Moore. Also, visit the Office of Preparedness and Response Extreme Heat webpage for more resources and tips on staying safe and healthy during hot weather. Scam Watch
Stay up to date with the latest news on scams, fraud alerts, and telemarketing hazards. Check back every month to help educate yourself on potential dangers and how to best handle them. To learn more, please visit the FDIC Consumer Resource Center. Crypto Currency ATM ScamsAs new technology emerges, scammers find new ways to exploit it. One of the latest tools is cryptocurrency ATMs—colorful kiosks now appearing in malls, gas stations, supermarkets, and convenience stores across the U.S. These machines offer a legitimate way to exchange cash for cryptocurrency, but scammers are increasingly using them to bypass fraud protections enforced by banks and the postal system. Their goal is simple: trick or scare victims into sending money or granting access to their devices. Victims are often told there's an urgent issue—like a legal problem or security threat—and are directed to use a crypto ATM to “resolve” it immediately. Another common scam involves fraudsters posing as bank officials, claiming your money is at risk. They instruct you to withdraw cash and deposit it into a "safe account" via the kiosk. This is always a scam. Some ways to combat this type of fraud:- Stay Informed:
- Crypto Currency, and their related ATMs, aren't scams themselves, they just offer more unrestricted access to someone's crypto wallet than needing to go through a financial institution.
- If you don't understand what Crypto Currency is, take some time to discuss it with a trusted friend or financial advisor. For most people, it isn't something that will ever be used.
- Know that Crypto Currency, and their ATMs, are NEVER used to safely store money by financial institutions for their clients. Market rates cause money kept in these accounts, or "wallets" to change in price. Financial institutions won't ever move your money to an account like that without your express consent.
- Stay Aware:
- Scammers have moved to using Crypto ATMs as a way to steal from their victims. Unless you are specifically looking to invest in Crypto Currency or add money to your Crypto wallet, you should never use these machines. Individuals who say they are representing a company will NEVER ask you to use them either.
- If you suspect the individual you are in contact with is trying to get you to send them Crypto Currency, either using one of these kiosks or by other means, hang up and talk to a trusted friend or advisor.
- If you believe you are the victim of an Internet crime, or if you are aware of an Internet crime, you can file a complaint with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

Driver SpotlightThis month, we are excited to shine the spotlight on the three incredibly hard-working part-time drivers: Brewer Gray, Paul Laun, and Sal Emelio (pictured left to right)! These gentlemen currently help with door-to-door services and deviations. Each day would be a lot harder if they weren't there to lend a hand to the busy schedule. For that, we would like to give them our sincerest thanks! If you have Brewer, Paul, or Sal as your driver, thank them for the outstanding service they have provided to your friends and neighbors!
