The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners have approved a lease agreement with Kent Island Community Garden, Inc., allowing the relocation of the garden to county property at 210 White Pine Lane in Stevensville, next to the offices of the Fire Marshal.

Since 2015, the Kent Island Community Garden has thrived within the Harborview subdivision on land owned by the Galilee Evangelical Lutheran Church. However, the church has decided to sell the property, putting the garden’s future at risk. In response, the gardening group, led by John McKnight, reached out to the County Commissioners for assistance in finding a new location.

The County Commissioners, in collaboration with General Services and the Fire Marshal’s Office, identified a portion of county land as the ideal new site for the community garden. The area offers ample space for growth and necessary utilities, with proximity to the Cross-Island Trail, local schools, and the Queen Anne’s County Public Library.

The relocation ensures that the garden, which serves a diverse group of gardeners and offers handicapped-accessible garden beds, can continue its important work of providing affordable food and promoting sustainable gardening practices. The Kent Island Community Garden also partners with the University of Maryland Extension Master Gardeners Program to offer educational opportunities for the community.

With the Commissioners' support, the garden will now have a secure home, allowing it to grow and serve even more residents in the years to come.

There have been several discussions during our recent County Commissioner Meetings, regarding the budget and Maryland's Blueprint. Commissioner Jack Wilson recently addressed concerns and clarified information to dispel rumors and disinformation about state and county funding levels for public schools, as well as the history of the Kirwan Commission / Maryland's Blueprint. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these important topics to better understand their impact on our community. All of the information that has been discussed is available on our website.
