QAC Aging and Transportation
Stay Informed and Safe this August! You never think about an emergency preparedness plan until it's already too late. This month, take the time to stop, think, and plan for hurricane season. With changing temperatures and high humidity, the chances of large storms and hurricanes increase dramatically. Being prepared helps you and everyone around you. The National Hurricane Survival Initiative states that you should stock these six basics in your home for just such an emergency: - Bottled Water. An active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water every day, while children and nursing mothers need more. Three gallons of water per person is recommended.
- Non-Perishable Food. A three-day supply of easy to eat food. Things like canned goods, high energy foods, and especially extra food for infants. Don't forget a can opener!
- Basic First Aid Items. Items like adhesive bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, and any non-prescription drugs are great to keep in an easy to reach first aid kit. Keep one in your car too!
- Tools/Supplies. Flashlights, a battery-operated radio (with extra batteries), a lighter or matches and candles in a water-tight container, a pocketknife, whistle, and a list of local shelters.
- Clothing and Bedding. Sturdy shoes, rain gear, blankets, sunglasses, and hats for each member of the family.
- Specialty Items. Sanitary and personal hygiene items, as well as anything that you can't live without or can't live without you; including prescription medication (after consulting your doctor), prescription eyeglasses, pets, and extra water-tight bags to quickly grab personal documents and keep them safe.
Keep these items in an easy to carry container, such as a camping backpack or large duffle bag, and in a location in your home where all members of the family know it is. Stay informed on the latest weather updates by visiting the National Weather Service. For more information on hurricanes and hurricane preparedness, visit Ready.gov/Hurricanes.
