Important Alert: Gas Appliance Safety
The Queen Anne’s County Plumbing Board has raised concerns about incorrect orifices and regulators being used by some contractors for gas appliances. It's crucial to understand that gas appliances sold today predominantly utilize orifices and regulators for natural gas (methane), while our county primarily uses propane gas (butane) for these appliances. Using the wrong components can pose a serious fire or explosion hazard.
If you reside in an area where propane (butane) is used and are purchasing a new or used gas appliance, ensure it is compatible with your fuel type. Most new appliances come from the factory with orifices and regulators for natural gas (methane) combustion. Thus, hiring licensed contractors (licensed in Maryland and Queen Anne’s County) to retrofit the appliance with the correct orifices and regulators is crucial for safety.
Note: Whenever you need to hire a Master Plumber or HVAC Contractor, verify their licensing with both the State of Maryland and Queen Anne’s County. A simple call to the Plumbing/HVAC Board (410-758-1271) to confirm their license can save you money, provide peace of mind, and ensure your job is handled professionally and up to code.
