Stormwater Pond Maintenance on Kent Island

Queen Annes County (2)

The County has been doing maintenance on County stormwater ponds on Kent Island. Riverside Public Housing has been completed and Terrapin Grove Senior Housing is in progress. Next up will be Matapeake Elementary School. The first step in maintaining ponds is to keep woody vegetation away from concrete structures and pipes. Once vegetation is cleared, structure failures can be more easily identified. Holes in pipes can cause erosion, sinkholes,  and compromise the integrity of stormwater control structures. Stormwater ponds are working to catch sediment and nutrients from developed land to prevent pollution from entering waterways. Overtime ponds fill up with sediment and need to be dredged out to their design elevations in order to catch sediment again. Although several trees will be removed around stormwater ponds for maintenance, tree planting efforts are underway at both Riverside public housing and Matapeake this fall. Destabilized surfaces are restabilized with grass after maintenance is complete.
