MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY SERVICES

The residents and visitors to Queen Anne’s County are extremely fortunate. We live in a remarkable and beautiful area, and enjoy a lovely lifestyle in the “land of pleasant living.” At the same time we enjoy the benefits of being close to our nation’s capitol, and the wonderful city of Baltimore. We can all enjoy the “eastern shore” lifestyle that we cherish while at the same time taking advantage of the opportunities that living adjacent to a large metropolitan area affords.

However, living next door to “our nation’s capitol” does have it risks. Although many of us would consider the traffic getting to and from the western shore as being the greatest problem we face, we all know that the tragic events of September 11, 2001 have created a “new world”, and with it a new set of risks. In order to help preserve the very lifestyle we cherish, we all must take on added responsibilities. The Department of Emergency Services, as part of its mission to protect the safety and health and well being of Queen Anne’s County citizens, is charged with very specific activities planning for, and responding to, environmental and man-made disasters. The Department is responsible for facilitating and directing the planning, mitigation, response and recovery for these types of unexpected events. However, as we have witnessed in major hurricanes and winter storms, many of these activities are community based. Our response and recovery is a community effort. We all have a role.

In order to be well prepared for any event, whether it is environmental or man-made, we must all be prepared, alert, and diligent. We must be aware of what is going on around us and be prepared to care for our families and our community in time of need.

We hope this guide will assist you in becoming better prepared. In this guide you will find basic self-help information, essential numbers, as well as some basic safety information. It also contains information on how to become more involved through our Nation’s Citizens Corps and Community Emergency Response Teams. Please join with us in protecting our communities and sustaining the lifestyle that we so enjoy.
